Bio
"FM Supreme Rocks Our World" Chicago Tribune Twenty-two year old Jessica Disu, aka FM Supreme, was born on Chicago's West Side. She was raised by her single mother and is the middle child of five. FM Supreme's father, a descendent of the Yoruba tribe in Lagos, Nigeria, played no role in her upbringing. However, she is very proud of her African ancestry. When she was eight years old, she and her siblings were placed in DCFS where she discovered writing as her craft. At ten years old, she was given the moniker, "Supreme Being" by her biological mother who was granted custody of her children after a four and a half year battle with the State of Illinois. At 15, Jessica Disu aka Supreme Being began writing poetry and changed her rap name to FM Supreme after reading the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Most people think that "FM" in her name stands for the radio dial, however, it actually is an acronym for Forever Maroon. The Maroons were runaway slaves who started their own colonies, which still exist in Jamaica. At Senn High School, during FM Supreme's sophomore year, she joined Maggie Daley's After School Matters program under a youth apprenticeship with non-profit organization, Kuumba Lynx. There, FM Supreme found her passion for performance and slam poetry. She would later go on to become 5x Finalist and 2x consecutive champion of Chicago's citywide High School poetry slam festival, Louder Than A Bomb. As a performance poet and teaching artist, FM Supreme has trained under Kevin Coval, Toni Asante Lightfoot (Cave Canem) Roger Bonair-Agard (Cave Canem), avery r young, Ugochi and other highly skilled prolific writers. In 2006, FM Supreme graduated from The Chicago Academy for the Arts High School media arts program. She went to college for a year in New York City where she continued to develop herself as writer, poet and MC. In 2008, FM Supreme interned at Warner Brothers Records for the spring semester. She returned home to Chicago determined to make a name for her self and labeled her journey and mixtape, "The Beautiful Grind." FM Supreme has independently released 5 projects in the past five years: The Diary of A Mad Black Woman Mixtape (2005), Forever Maroon EP (2006), Basik Gumbo (2007), The Beautiful Grind Mixtape (2008), The FM Supreme Project EP (2010). She has performed all over the United States and briefly toured Europe, performing at clubs and venues in Amsterdam and London. In addition to traveling and performing, FM Supreme is a creative writing teacher, where she is actively a faculty member- part time, at a private all girls school. Jessica Disu aka FM Supreme is also an events coordinator. She worked briefly at The Jane Addams Hull House Museum (UIC) in 2007 where she had the privilege of coordinating DJ Kool Herc (a Founder of Hip Hop) and Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown's "funky drummer") in a performance for which she opened the show with her own original music. FM Supreme has worked as talent manager for non profit, Young Chicago Authors, booking youth poets and performers for performances on Millennium Park's Jay Pritzker Pavilion Stage, the Fun Stage at The Taste of Chicago (2009) and Brave New Voices Alumnus Open Mic (HBO/Chicago). FM Supreme has shared the stage with Boyz II Men (WGCI Back to School Jam, Douglas Park, 2001) MC Lyte (Africa Fest 2007), David Banner (University of Chicago 2008), Saul Williams (Sarah Lawerence College, NY 2007, Columbia College, 2009), The Cool Kids (Reggie's 2010), Jean Grae (Reggie's 2010) and a host of other reknown performers, poets and artists. -
