Bio
A native of Yorba Linda, California, Ian Le Vo began his musical training at the age of 5 with classical piano lessons. Continuing his piano studies through the age of 11, Ian shifted his focus to the saxophone at age 10, and soon began to aggressively pursue the study of jazz. As well as being selected for the 2000 IAJE California All-State Jazz Band, Ian was an active member of the SCSBOA (Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association) honor jazz groups throughout his tenure at Esperanza High School. Also dedicated to small ensemble playing, he founded a trio that within three years had become one of the leading groups among magnet arts schools across Southern California. .. .. Ian graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Music from UCLA in 2004. During his time there, Ian has had the great fortune of playing with musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Joey DeFrancesco, Gerald Wilson, Garnett Brown and Llew Matthews (pianist for Nancy Wilson). In addition, he has studied with Tom Ranier, Roberto Miranda (former Bassist of Horace Tapscott and Charles Lloyd), the late Harold Land, and Jeff Clayton (co-founder of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra), as well as classical saxophone with Doug Masek. During this time, Ian also studied flute with Jeff Clayton, and clarinet with Alan Durst. In addition, Ian was selected by Kenny Burrell to take part in UCLA's community outreach program, as a member of the Gluck Jazz Combo. A particularly gratifying experience for Ian, this group of the best players from UCLA performs for underprivileged children and other members of the community who would not otherwise have exposure to music. .. .. In 2006, Ian received his Masters Degree in Jazz Reeds at The California Institute of the Arts under the mentorship of Paul Novros (former teacher of Ravi Coltrane, son of John Coltrane). Already a familiar face at some of Los Angeles' most prestigious venues, Ian has performed with his quartet at Steamers in Fullerton, The Jazz Bakery in Culver City, Charlie O's in Van Nuys, 2nd Street Jazz in Downtown Los Angeles, Catalina's Bar and Grill in Hollywood and Rocco in downtown LA. .. .. In addition to his freelance musician schedule, Ian remains devoted to music education, with a packed schedule of teaching at 7 elementary schools, and maintaining a saxophone, flute, and clarinet studio. -
