Released to Canadian campus radio in 2009, the Jon Miller Quartet's debut CD "Orchidology" hit number 1 position on Earshot Magazine's weekly jazz charts for stations in Calgary, Windsor, and Victoria. The CD has also been heard on CBC radio ("Hot Air", "Tonic", "Espace Musique") and in the US, Brazil and Portugal. "Orchidology" is available online at Calgary based Kerfmusic.com and CD Baby.com, and on iTUNES. You can also find "Orchidology" at Lyle's Place, 770 Yates St, Victoria BC. Also at Long and McQuade Music, Victoria BC and at Fascinating Rhythm in Nanaimo, BC. The Jon Miller Quartet has been active on the Vancouver Island live music scene since 2003, performing original repertoire and jazz standards at venues such as Hermann's Jazz Club, The Butchart Gardens and Victoria JazzFest. Lately the addition of Roy Styffe on alto and tenor sax has been a great plus, his sophisticated melodic sense and rhythmic drive meshing flawlessly with the playing styles of guitarist Rob Cheramy and bassist James Young.
Leader and drummer Jon Miller spent formative years in Montreal, cutting his teeth as sideman alongside the likes of Skip Bey, Bill Coon, Jeff Johnston, John Stech, Alex Walkington, Andre White, Andre Leroux, Guy Boisvert, Jon Gearey, Greg Clayton among others while also doing a performance degree at McGill University. Later he traveled Europe and lived in the US (Philadelphia) working with Calder Spanier, Tom Lyne, Charlie Hunter and Dave Davis, among others. In Victoria BC Miller plays as sideman with many Vancouver Island jazz musicians in addition to composing, arranging and leading his own quartet.
Absolutely! Alternatives to the smoking chimneys of the french rail service! Invented at Nice station when we missed the last train out and had to wait until 6.30am to get back (or was is one of those french holidays when nothing is open?)
The Metro gig was a blast! I'm so glad that our solo worked so well! I've heard lots of possitive feedback from it!!! CD release on the 18th? Sweet! I'm there... Where are you having it?
