Kanashibari is the romanization of the Japanese term for sleep, or more accurately, dream paralysis. It is the state of being trapped between the void of dream and reality, a state when one is most sensitive to supernatural presences.
It is this dream state Kanashibari wishes to inflict upon the listener, through waves of sounds, voices, and the addition of subtle melodic undertones to create an environment of lush surreal hallucinogenic scenery.
Loki Tomoko Helvete began creating music for the Japan-based surreal fashion/visual artist Luciferrot, creating the soundtracks used for Luciferrot's performances, for whom (s)he also makes masks and participates as performer/model.
In the beginning, the music for Kanashibari was more minimal, based in surrealist noise, ambience, and experimental treated voices and loops, with hints of soundtrack-esque melody, influenced by early industrial, experimental, and avant-garde Krautrock artists.
Recently, Kanashibari has progressed in a more melodic direction, with more influences from gothic music and neofolk. Kanashibari is music for dead souls still dreaming.
Helvete also has a new project this year formed together with kindred spirit, Jeckyll, known as Drowning in Sand.
Drowning is Sand is an exploration in ambient/noise soundscapes and the more elemental sounds of audial deconstructivism created by a fusion of synthetic and organic sources.
