Hmm... about me...
I began singing at an early age. My 1st professional gig was when I ran away from my parents at a street fair and was found singing on a box with some homeless guys. Later, I sang with my sisters at talent and variety shows- the type that were so prevalent in the 80s. We donned the plastic bowler hats and black leotards and did tunes like Lullaby of Broadway and How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down on the Farm.
At about 13, my folks gave me a dollar to spend at a yard sale, and I bought a book of 78 speed records by Carmen Cavalerro. Later I listened to a lot of Joanie Sommers (a pre-Julie London singer) and learned her tunes inside and out. At 14, I was invited to sing with the Belieu Big Band (I think there were 6 members)- we played at Elks Lodges around Oregon.
In high school I attended the jazz camp at Mt. Hood Community College where I met Mel Brown and Thara Memory among others. Thara made me cry by insulting me- but when I came back the next day and showed him that he couldn't get to me- he invited me to sing with his band when I was ready. That was in 1986- I went to Thara in 1990 and told him I was ready to sing with his band- and he put me to work. I fronted the Monday Night Band for 3 years. Singing and traveling with a 28 piece band was such a joy. I truly hope to sing again with a big band.
In the years since then I have done many things with my performing- from singing backup for a motown act, to doing an independent film soundtrack. I have studied with amazing players including Andrew Hill, Mel Brown, Roberto Miranda, Gordon Lee, and others. I continue to perform at charity events and small house concerts, and my sisters and I still do 4 part harmony when we are together. I treasure the ever changing experience of creating music with people who cannot do otherwise. As I grow older and my experiences change me, I find new music to help lend meaning to my life. I believe that artists use everything to create their art, regardless of its medium.
Now that my children are getting older, I am again looking to get more involved in playing music with others. I love to make music- whether it's jazz, experimental, or gospel/r&b. It's time for me to share the joy of creating with others. I welcome any suggestions for collaboration!
Peace, Kirstin
